Homeownership is a pathway to wealth and security. According to the Fed's latest Survey of Consumer Finances, homeowners have 44.5 times more net worth than renters...but only 49.8% of LGBTQIA+ adults own their homes vs 70.1% of non-LGBTQIA+ adults (Conron, 2019). Many factors contribute to these statistics including lack of family support, higher levels of homelessness at a young age, and discriminatory practices by mortgage lenders and other players in the industry. The LGBTQIA+ community has fought for equality on so many fronts, and it's time we fight to level the playing field in the arena of homeownership.
